Remembering Elaine…

Elaine D. Wright was born on February 3, 1956, in Indianapolis, where she grew up. She graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1974, after which she moved to Bloomington to attend Indiana University. At IU, Elaine earned a bachelor of science degree in Criminal Justice from the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, with a second major in Spanish.

The youngest member of her family, she was preceded in death by her parents, James and Dorothy Wright, and two sisters, Vera and Mary.

Since August 1980, Elaine worked full-time at IU in several offices, including the Office of Student Financial Assistance, the Slavic Languages and Literatures Department, the Telecommunications Department, and the Near Eastern Languages and Cultures Department. In Spring 2010, Elaine received her 30-year service award from the university.

Elaine was a devout Christian who lived her faith with all her heart. She was extremely caring, completely trustworthy, generous, loyal, honest, and hard working. She was a lovely lady and a true friend. Elaine loved to laugh and spend time with friends. She also loved children, shopping, going out to eat and helping others.

Elaine also greatly enjoyed learning languages and after her graduation from IU took classes in Russian, French, Japanese, Hebrew, and Arabic. Her dream was to someday travel to visit friends and former colleagues in various parts of the world. She also hoped to teach English as a second language.

Elaine was beloved by her adopted family in Bloomington and Indianapolis, by neighbors, colleagues and friends here and abroad. We will truly miss her.

Undescribable sadness...

Elaine was a very lovely lady. I had spent one academic year in Bloomington during which Elaine and I came to know each other and became friends. Her warmness had lessened my feeling of homesickness in the United States and represented a major source of motivation for me while I was writing my Masters thesis. Even after my departure, Elaine and I remained friends and like sisters, my e-mail is full of messages received from Elaine in which she says she would come and visit me in Tunisia in the spring of 2011, unfortunately that will never happen...

Quotes from Elaine's mails :
1- Hi, Imen. I know that you must be really busy getting ready for the wedding and everything but I thought that I would just get in touch with you and see how you were? Are you ok? I cannot wait to come see you, I wish I had lots of money then I would jump on a plane and come right away to see you in Tunis. Love from your big sis, Elaine

2-I can’t wait to see you real soon. Love, your big sis and buddy, Elaine

3-I also would like to get a master’s in second language studies. It would be easier to pursue this if I am not working full-time. This may sound funny but I’ll be better off financially once I retire and then also (God willing) I would like to start travelling and you will be one of the first that I plan on visiting.

4-Hi, Imen. How are you? Just thought that I would let you know that I have not forgotten about you! How could I? You’re just like my little sister!

5-Don’t worry I haven’t forgotten about visiting you, I definitely plan on doing that (God willing). It will happen at just the right time for both you and your husband and me.

6-Hi, Imen. It is so good to hear from you! I really miss you! I haven’t forgotten about trying to come see you! I hope that you are doing well. God willing I will be able to see you real soon. I plan on retiring in about two years. Love, Elaine

7-If you can wait till I retire in the spring of 2011God willing that would give me time to travel.

Elaine will always bein the heart...

You will be truly missed

My knowing of Elaine's passing came as a shocking news to me!! I will always remember our talks in the NELC office, your helpfulness, and, above all, your smile.

You will be truly missed Elaine.

As imperceptibly as Grief

As imperceptibly as Grief
The summer lapsed away --
Too imperceptible at last
To seem like Perfidy --
A Quietness distilled
As Twilight long begun,
Or Nature spending with herself
Sequestered Afternoon --
The Dusk drew earlier in --
The Morning foreign shone --
A courteous, yet harrowing Grace,
As Guest, that would be gone --
And thus, without a Wing
Or service of a Keel
Our Summer made her light escape
Into the Beautiful.

Emily Dickinson c. 1865

A poem of impermanence and beauty, read at Elaine's Memorial. May her light rest in communion with the Beautiful.

Listening to "Tears, Idle tears"......

Sometimes the stars are jealous of Mankind
When they see angels born and live with us
They bid their time with rage until they find
How blissful fancy has our hearts possessed
Just when we thought it safe to dream of tomorrow
And build our castles high upon the clouds
They poor above their oceans full of sorrow
And cover us in shrouds.

Elaine? Why go so soon and live us in despair
That divine smile, that like the sun you beam
Upon the world, shall shine no more?
Well then, come heavy heart let us
begin
our gloomy journey to the under world.
But before then, go here and listen to the poet's "idle tears"

To a Lovely Lady

I was so sad to learn of Elaine's passing. I only knew Elaine through the NELC department, where I had set up a memorial lecture fund for my late husband Dr. Victor Danner. Whenever I had a question, she would quickly respond. She was always so kind and attentive to details and made sure that I knew about the schedule of the speaker coming, the meals, and reception. She always made sure that whatever was needed would be available.

Elaine was a lovely and gracious lady with a good sense of humor. Thought I didn't see her very often, I liked her very much and felt she was a real asset to the NELC department. Iknow that she will be deeply missed.

May God bless her noble soul and comfort her loved ones.
